Japan is moving towards more individualism than collectivism after the economic bubble. Nonetheless, this is a good opportunity for Japan to adapt to the globalization world and be more competitive. The cultural change will lead to greater mobility of employees, which means people will move around jobs more than before. As a consequence, company loses loyal employees but what they get by recruiting other people is the experiences. When people have mobility, they tend to gain experiences among a lot of companies and build social network among various groups of people. As people switch companies more and more, companies have to prepare for it and adjust the recruiting system which helps them gain more international and diverse workforce. Now a day a shift towards individualism can be seen. Workers get bonuses based on their performance but they hardly get offered any perks. As globalizations increases it is likely that Japanese companies become more and more westernized. Such changes can have both beneficial and harmful effects on Japanese economy. Focusing on individualism brings a high level of entrepreneurial activity with it, which involves the opportunity for new products and new ways of doing business. Moreover it also finds expression in a high degree of managerial mobility between companies, which might be bad for firms. When a worker frequently switches workplaces, he might lack the company specific knowledge and thus might not be so valuable for a company. The high fluctuation makes it also very difficult to build a team within an organization to perform collective tasks.

Cultural change in Japan was triggered by the economic recession in the 1990’s. Traditional Confucian values focused on loyalty, high moral and ethical values and set the pathway for relationships with others in traditional Japanese businesses. When the generation born after 1964 lacked the same commitment to traditional Japanese value as their parents but they grew up in a world that was richer, where western ideas were beginning to make themselves felt, and where the possibilities seemed greater. Because of they did not want to be tied to a company for life, so they become a salary man. Traditional ways of doing business and perceptions of the loyal, hard-working salary-man were slowly being replaced by movements toward individualism among workers. After witnessing older workers being laid-off during economic slumps, younger generations believed loyalty would no longer be reciprocated. In addition, a shift toward western values in a world where the new generations were freer, richer and individualistic meant that Japanese firms had to change the way they appealed to new generations.
